Nicholas McArthur's and Robert Vaughan's 'The Dancing Plague of 1518' references a mysterious outbreak of dancing-to-death that occurred in Strasbourg. Set to Gregorian plainchant and electronic trance music, the piece takes the audience out into the streets, finding parallels between religious ecstasy and club culture, and more broadly, capitalism and psychological distress'...

Luke Jennings, The Guardian, 2011

In July 1518 a woman named Frau Troffea, began to dance obsessively in a street in Strasbourg. Her relentless dance lasted for six days. Within that time 34 others had joined her and within a month, there were around 400 dancers. Many of these people eventually died from heart attacks, strokes, or exhaustion. It is not known why these people danced to their deaths, nor is it clear that they were dancing wilfully.

We are that plague, the dancing plague of 1518, We are the possessed, the accursed, Our bound to Frau Trofiea is that of a father, a son, a lover and soul mate. We are the virus that has laid dormant for nearly 500 years.

'We are as old as the entire biological history of the earth, and our blood streams are tributaries of the great sea of its total memory'.

No amount of debasement or shame is greater than that which we have already endured in suppressing our infections. Our mania or aberration there for, is not this act we are about perform, but in the routine of our every day lives.

We have no buboes; our disease cannot be seen on the skin, nor in the limpness of our constitutions. They are manifest only in the violence of our convulsive dancing, our forlorn expressions and our sexual impulses.

We are products of a world that champions consumption and the fulfillment of individuals desire over human virtue, and so we will end with a testimonial to this ideology... by consuming our self, in the best way we know how, though total complicity to our disease and we invite all of you to get infected. Join us...

From the burning fuselage of a damned aircraft to the scrubland verges of smog-blackened motorways, Nicholas McArthur has consistently pursued deliverance in seemingly adverse environments. In 2011, A God Shaped Hole moves beyond the artist’s recent evocation of the ecstatic death throes of a plague-ridden community to locate itself firmly within the mire of the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Exploring the notion of a land-waste dependent primitivism, Macarthur asks, in an age of excessive consumption and profligacy, what approaches to faith and belief do we have to look forward to?

This question led the artist to immerse himself within squalid territories of refuse, navigating landfill mounds, urban dumps and brown-field sites. These foul topographies of waste provided an insight into a future world, where consumption remains unhindered by the depletion of its resources. In Macarthur’s vision, communities eat rubbish in a hopeless regurgitative frenzy. Aware of the literal and spiritual void their consumption has induced, these ‘believers’ burn rubbish in a furious acceleration of expenditure, a doomed attempt to make this absence seem more real. Combining sculpture, painting, performance and video, A God Shaped Hole proposes a polluted context in which the speculative belief systems of a future race can be evoked.

On entering the gallery, a banner made from discarded bed sheets crudely reads 'we must eat the waste', in what appears to be both an encouraging prompt to the faithful and an ominous warning to those contemplating dissent. ‘Into The Void/The Waste Mountains' draws crudely upon the aesthetics and practices of the tribal cultures that find the resources for the construction of shrines and talismans in a plethora of salvaged materials such as Perspex, plastic sheeting and timber.

Blood soaked plasters, used cotton buds and piles of hair are arranged to form sites of worship. Large figures are depicted in ecstatic reverie, traipsing their way into an obsidian abyss at the centre of the piece, whilst two fires of molten plastic rage on either side. A reclaimed television set entangled in the structure of an unusual altar screens a performance set to an original score composed by sound artist Mikey Kirkpatrick. The artist delivers an intense monologue in a costume made from all manner of waste, whilst ritualistic dancing, spasmodic convulsions and the gorging of burning plastic give a direct and penetrating insight into the visionary narrative of the exhibition and question what it could mean to believe in this void.
